RhoGam....

I went in to have my supposedly mercury free, preservative free Rhophylac IV injection on the 23rd. I am finally feeling brave and or good enough to talk about it.
After receiving the injection my arm immediately began to ache and go numb. It took her about 8 minutes to push the injection into my vein. I personally think she should have taken a bit longer. 10 minutes after the injection was finished I got an extreme headache that pounded directly between my eyes. I felt like I had been sledgehammered between the eyes. I also went very pale and was dizzy. I think that if I would have stood up I would have passed out. I also got a very nasty metallic taste in my mouth, that is still there days later. The metallic taste leads me to believe that this injection was NOT truly mercury and heavy metal free. They are still allowed to use preservatives and mercury in the injections, the flip side being that as long as the amount is below a certain percentage they can label them as mercury and preservative free.
I was kept for over an hour because of my reaction. One of the nurses there mentioned that since I have had a reaction before that I am most likely not reacting to the RhoGam itself but to the mercury in it. Yes, That is right he admitted there was really mercury in it!
One of the other nurses also mentioned to me that while Rhophylac claims to be free of those toxins, they did have one other patient who did her research on Rhophylac and found their claims to not be true. In this patients research she did find that there is one RhoGam that is truly free of those toxins. This is made by Bayer. The nurse told me that she couldn't say anymore, but that she did know that they could order it as they did so for that patient.
I have included the information that I have found on the Bayer RhoGam and how to get it at the bottom of this post. But before I get to that I wanted to mention the KNOWN side effects of the injection that I was given. I am typing this FROM THE BOOKLET that came with the injection.
WARNINGS/PRECAUTIONS: Allergic or hypersensitivity reactions may occur. Products made from human plasma may contain infectious agents and diseases. For patients with anemia Rhophylac will increase the severity of the anemia. ADVERSE REACTIONS: Most common are nausea, dizziness, headache, malaise, chills, increased body temperature, and mild extravascular hemolysis. SEVERE REACTIONS: Death. Pretty scary considering these booklets are sugar coated, so they don't scare people! Something else that I learned in my weekend of research. Many children who have never been vaccinated and are autistic usually have a RH- mother who was given some form of RhoGam at 28 weeks. There is no way to actually test the reactions and effects that Rhogam has on the baby growing in your belly. They just ASSUME that it won't harm the fetus. Most children who are autistic test off the charts for heavy metal toxicity in their systems. Parents who have never vaccinated but still have a autistic child couldn't figure out the link.....until they looked at the mothers blood type. If you are an RH- mother please look into making your midwife/Dr order you the Rhogam without Mercury! Remember that just because it says it is free of those toxins doesn't mean it really is. It may only have less than is required to print in their booklets, still allowing them to call it toxin free!
[ ] MERCURY-FREE RHOGAM VACCINE If someone you know is pregnant and RH-negative, they will have to be given the Rhogam vaccine - a vaccine that contains mercury. Babies born to mothers receiving this vaccine have been shown to have mercury in their bodies before ever receiving any vaccines of their own. Since mercury is a neurotoxin, obviously less is better. The good news is that mercury-free Rhogam is available in the United States from Bayer Pharmaceuticals. It used to be called BayRoh-D, but is now called Hyper Rho. You can get a list of distributors that your doctor can use to order it by calling 800-243-4153.

Jeanette, I am so sorry about your reaction to this. What a horrible scary thing.
After doing my research, I've decided that we will skip the 28 week shot, but have the baby tested after it's born and if it's RH+ I will get the shot. We decided to skip the 28 week shot because my research showed that it only made the chances better by a very small amount, and it has a higher risk to the baby then.

Thank you so much for posting this info. Now I know which shot to ask for ahead of time to make sure they have it on hand for me when the time comes.

Wow thankful I'm AB+ and do not have to worry about it. So sorry this happened to you.

Dalayna,

How do you go about getting to skip the 28 week shot. Anytime I have brought up skipping until birth I am told that it is not a possiablity. Mostly because I am O- instead of just being a -. I would prefer to skip but have never been allowed to.......I would love to know your Dr's take on this!

I'll have to let you know how it goes... I havn't told my Dr. that I'm skipping it yet.
I am O- also.
I'm just trying to do all the research I can on it so I feel very comfortable in my decision and comfortable enough so stand my ground ~ They can not make me have anything I don't agree to.

sorry to hear about your experience, to dito Dalayna's comments, they cannot make you, worst case scenerio is your dr refuses to treat you anymore and you have to find another one...Think you live in Wy which I understand isn't very supportive of midwives and homebirth, but if your dr boots you a midwife is usually more sympathetic and less interfering in a pregnancy. It is a matter of being firm, which I know from first hand experience is close to impossible in pregnancy and delivery. We left a hospital against medical advise with my second son, and they literally sent in social workers, they pulled my husband out of the room and proceeded to give me counceling because they "thought" I was an abused wife who was being bullied by my husband and then made me sign a stack of papers 2 inches thick before they would let me go home. Beyond that, they also escorted us out of the hospital and put me on the street in a wheel chair before they would let me go. We carried him another week further, at home with NO complications while at home! Drs don't always know best. Similar experiences with my older son's reaction to a shot and other medical issues (I was told over and over nothing was wrong with my son, but they changed their story really fast and tried to cover their tracks when he developed a bruising rash right after his 18 mos shots)...basically we don't go to drs unless we have cut something off or are dying. You have 2 great kids already, sure this one will do well too, sorry about the medically community!
PS I am Curt's wife, your hubby knows us better than you do, but I think I have met you 2 or 3 times.

Jeanette, I'm so sorry. It's too bad you have to read the fine print below the fine print on everything. It seems as if nothing anymore is what it says it is.

The Rhogam shot is not necessary at all during pregnancy unless you have had a previous abortion, miscarrage or there is trama that would cause the baby's blood to mix with yours. Very Very unusual cases So it is perfectly okay to refuse the Rhogam shot until after you find out if your baby is Rh + or in the case of a sever trama during pregancy. I am A- and do not plan on getting the shot until after my baby is born and we find out what it is. Also if your husband is also Rh- there is no reason to get the Rhogam shot because your babys wont be +.

Wow, Jeanette! Scary!! I'm glad you are okay.

Wow, insane! I'm just about to go get my shot and didn't know anything about this. I'll definitely request to have the shot from Bayer. Not having the shot scares me since I didn't have it when I was pregnant with Lias and ended up losing the baby after Lias. So, I want the shot but don't want the side effects of the mercury! Crazy. Thanks for the great info!

Hi, I recieved CSL Behring Rhophylac injection after an amniocentisis at around 17 weeks and will receive another at my 28 week appt. I researched this and found that this DID NOT contain any preservative namely thimerosal. Is this the shot you are referring to that has mercury in it? Where did you find this info? I am scared to death beacause I felt like I did my research and I found that it absolutely did not contain this ingredient? Thanks a bunch for any information you can send me!

Thank you for this information! I am RH Negative and the pressure to get the rhogam shot is coming up now that I am almost 28 weeks.

I quickly realized, after going through the "system" for my pregnancy care, that I have to educate myself on all of the standard procedures/testing they put pregnant women through. I have come to the conclusion I know more than the medical staff does about the side effects, risks, etc. of such things. They have tossed all sorts of stats out to me and when I have asked to see the actual studies, they fail to provide them for me (even though I offer to provide them with MY information).

From what I have learned about the rhogam shot, unless you are wanting to have another child (assuming this is your first), there is no need for the shot. Even if you've had a previous miscarriage and/or abortion, as long as you have had the rhogam injection at that time, that means your body should not have produced the antibodies that would potentially harm the next baby. (Again this is from what I have read and understood.)

I would certainly avoid the injection during pregnancy as the risk of cross-contamination with the mother's blood and that of her growing baby is not an issue unless she experiences a miscarriage, vaginal bleeding or undergoes one of the invasive tests.

Frankly, even the one made by Bayer (which I was told today is manufactured by a company called Talecris) - hyper-rho which claims to be latex and preservative free - makes me leary. Why would I trust any of these drug manufacturer's?

This is about OUR bodies and OUR babies. It is OUR experience. Thank you for sharing yours. More mama-to-be's need to be doing that (regardless of what the pregnancy-related experience is). United, we mama's are a powerful force. :)

Hi there, How can I find out about the Rhogam shots I've had, here in Canada??
A little history:
I am RH negative and I've had the Rhogam shot with all three of my pregnancies. All three of my children ended up to NOT be RH negative so, of course, I received a SECOND shot once they were born.

Now, my firstborn son has autism. My second born son has GI issues up the ying yang, and my only "relatively" healthy thirdborn daughter has joint pain at 3 years of age along with other things. She is my only baby not vaccinated and by far, my most healthy. I believe that along with the Rhogam shot and vaccinating my first two (secondborn didn't get his second MMR) that I now need to look into heavy metal toxicity.

Thanks for letting people know about this. I only wish I looked into it 6 years ago. :(

I have often wondered about the connection between Rhogam and Autism. My son is Autistic. I am not RH- nor did I receive Rhogam, but my mother is and did...twice (with my brother and me...as she had three children - me being the youngest of three children). My mother was told to have me tested as a child for learning disabilities but she never did. When I took my son to the Cleveland Clinic where he was diagnosed with Autism in 1996, I was told after filling out forms and being interviewed myself that I too am most likely Autistic but such a mild form that it would go undiagnosed. Knowing this, is it possible that there could have been Rhogam in MY system from my mother that would have always stayed in my body and crossed over to my son? I was able to get my mothers medical charts from her pregnancy with me, after a long struggle and much searching after many many years. I have the records to show when and how often my mother had received Rhogam. I just need to know if it is at all possible that it could have possibly effected more than one generation?! Could my mothers Rhogam shots have caused my sons Autism? I also suffered from HELLP Syndrome during my pregnancy with him and have researched a connection between HELLP Syndrome and Rhogam. It seems there are questions about that as well. Thank you in advance.
